About the Program

Started in 2021, Horizons at Cristo Rey program is a tuition-free, high quality academic and enrichment program serving K-8 students in North Philadelphia. In its third year, Horizons at Cristo Rey now serves 69 young people from across North Philadelphia.
The program enrolls new rising Kindergarten students each summer who will return every summer through the eighth grade for a six-week academic and enrichment program. Learning doesn't cease in the summer as there is also the option to attend an after-school program during the school year. Horizons at Cristo Rey is the first affiliate of Horizons National to expand its program offering into the school year.
The program aims to prevent summer learning loss and to provide after-school support and resources for children in our community. Without programs like Horizons, children can experience a substantial and cumulative erosion of reading and math skills that can leave them nearly three years behind by fifth grade.
Horizons’ mission aligns with Cristo Rey’s to provide a more equitable education for students in across the City of Philadelphia and prepare them for the future. We hope the program can better prepare K-8 students for high quality high schools like Cristo Rey Philadelphia.
