Our Mission

As an affiliate of Horizons National, Horizons at Cristo Rey's mission is to improve the life trajectory of students from under-served communities across Philadelphia by instilling in them the joy of learning, the skills for sucess, and the inspiration to realize their dreams.

About the Program

The Horizons at Cristo Rey program is a six week, tuition-free, high quality summer academic and enrichment program serving children in North Philadelphia. Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School has worked closely with Kenderton Elementary, a public K-8 neighborhood school in the Nicetown-Tioga section of Philadelphia, to recruit its first cohort of students.
The Horizons program works to close the achievement gap between children from under-served communities and their more affluent peers by preventing summer learning loss, also known as the "summer slide". Without programs like Horizons, children from under-served communities experience a substantial and cumulative erosion or reading and math skills that can leave them nearly three years behind their more affluent peers by fifth grade.
Horizons at Cristo Rey makes a long-term commitment to prevent summer learing loss by enrolling students who will continue in the summer program every year up until the 8th grade. The result is an average 2-3 month improvement in reading and math skills over each summer session.
